GRACE STAR — Lighting

Calm light for bedside reading

Bedside lighting should be directional, dimmable and reachable without standing up.

Calm light for bedside reading

Reading in bed fails for one of two reasons: the light spills across the whole room, or the reader has to sit up to reach the switch. Both are placement problems rather than brightness problems.

A table lamp on the nightstand throws light down onto a book and keeps the beam narrow. Placing it beside the head rather than behind it avoids a shadow across the page, and the switch stays within reach from the pillow.

An opaque shade matters more than output here: it blocks the sideways glare that reaches a partner. Rotating the shade towards the wall softens the beam further.

Keep the warmest colour temperature available and dim to the lowest comfortable step. A three-step touch dimmer is usually enough control for reading.
